Book Review: Hugh Campbell (2021) Farming Inside Invisible Worlds: Modernist Agriculture and its Consequences
We may think that the industrialisation of land use is some unstoppable trend. Maybe not. It's biophysical conflicts are becoming more and more challenging, both in terms of 'resource' limits (fossil fuel urea is just one), and in terms of social challenges (water quality particularly) and other consequences many choose not to consider. But there are also the internal conflicts that touch on the way we see now ... and how that is changing. The philosophical and cultural challenges. And how our currently dominant worldviews have become what they are, and the worlds made invisible, and the potentials unrealised. Hugh Campbell digs deep into the various 'cultures' have have, do, and perhaps will, make up agri-'culture' in New Zealand and other landscapes made through modern lens.
